Actor Kamaal Rashid Khan was arrested in Mumbai on Tuesday due to a controversial tweet he wrote in 2020, media reports said.
Khan, who was detained at the Mumbai airport Monday night, will be produced before a magistrate court in Borivali later in the day, according to officials. He was arrested by the Malad police.
Kamaal R Khan’s tweets and his open jibes at Bollywood films and actors often land him in trouble. Police were looking for Kamaal for two years, but he wasn’t in Mumbai.
An FIR was also registered against him in 2020 under various Indian Penal Code sections including 153 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot) and 500 (punishment for defamation), and provisions of the Information Technology Act.
“Kamal R Khan has been arrested today on my complaint. I welcome this move by the Mumbai police. He makes derogatory comments on social media and uses foul language. Such kind of behavior is unacceptable in society. By arresting him, Mumbai police has sent out a strong message against such people,” said Rahul Kanal.
